The newest issue of the Balancing Act Africa newletter arrived yesterday. As usual Russel Southwood fills the issue (151)
with astute analysis, news and updates on telecoms in Africa. But in this issue the cover story is entitled Broadband Wireless Access – Could it Give Incumbent Telcos a Run for their Money?, and that is a subject close to my heart. In this briefing, Adlane Fellah of Maravedis gives a brief, but precise overview of the position of wireless systems in the African telco market, and compares it to alternatives such as VSAT, DSL and fiber.

There are technologies that can and will make a difference to Africa. One of these is broadband wireless access. Although presently aimed at the small and medium sized companies in the local loop in cities and towns, it offers another way of giving the incumbent telcos a competitive run for their money. If costs fall, it could be a serious contender at a domestic level. Alternative telecoms networks – like the one announced for Ghana last week – might take an interest.
